A while ago, I started to rethink my cold cut bin. At the time, it was filled with salty, nitrate-filled cold cuts, fatty hot dogs and cholesterol laden cheeses. I realized that a lot of these little snack foods were packing on the calories and the negative health benefits. I needed a COLD CUT BIN MAKEOVER!
Looking back on it now, I realize that my cold bin has undergone some major changes that I'd like to tell you about in this post.
Here is a before and after snapshot of what is in my "cold cut" bin.
| Veggie Choices (BEFORE)
none |
Veggie Choices (AFTER) * organic baby carrots
* sliced celery
* sliced mushrooms (fresh)
* garlic bulbs
* large red onion (weekly) |
|
Protein Choices (BEFORE)
* sliced turkey breast cold cuts
* Black Forest ham cold cuts
* yellow American cheese
* turkey kielbasa sausage link
* Ballpark beef hot dogs
* fried chicken bits from the deli
* cheapest carton of dozen eggs |
Protein Choices (AFTER)
* sliced turkey breast cold cuts
* Black Forest ham cold cuts
* Morning Star veggie sausage patties
* chicken cutlet chunks
* hummus
* free-range, organic eggs |
Notice that my cold cut bin after has more veggie items in it than before. While these do require a weekly food prep under my Paleo lifestyle, it actually takes about a half an hour to prep a week's worth. Also, notice that my proteins have changed from salty, fatty meats and cheeses to leaner proteins and non-meat options. I've actually incorporated some non-meat choices like eggs and veggie meats like the Morningstar veggie patties.
What's in your cold cut bin? Feel free to share.
