my treadmill |
I'm not an Olympian, very "outdoorsy" person or an exercise buff. I really admire people who love exercising, naturally keep their weight down and eat whatever they want without gaining. For me, exercising does not come as easy. When I was younger, I was more active but after getting hit in a car by a drunk driver in my '20's, physical activity is always a bit painful but I've learned to manage the pain and work through it. So, I'm careful with exercising and am very careful with the types of exercises I choose. To motivate myself to exercise, I track what activities I do and how many times I do them with a "badge" system.
It sounds more than it really is but it is quite effective in keeping me mentally motivated. Each month, I create a goal for the number of badges that I want to achieve and a reward for it at the end. My reward is not a food one which for me would be counterproductive. It's a spa day (for one month), a beautiful piece of art glass (after 3 months); money in a separate bank account to purchase a savings CD (for 6 months) or money saved to make a donation to my favorite charity.
My favorite exercises are walking on the treadmill (see how I've created a 4-star treadmill experience) , yoga/pilates, lifting weights and dancing. When I exercise, I mark the calendar day with a colored sharpie to represent a "badge".
My badge system is very similar to my food calendar in that, I write down the exercise, the amount of time and the "rate" (if applicable).
Some of my notations are:
1) Walk 20m - 3.5
This means I've walked 20 minutes on the treadmill at a rate of 3.5.
2) Dance 15m
This means I've danced for 15 minutes.
3) Walk 10m - 3.0 Yoga 10m
This means that I've walked the treadmill at 10 minutes at a rate of 3.0 and finished by doing a yoga (link) routine for 10 minutes.
4) Walk 10m - 3.0, weights 15m
This means that I've walked the treadmill for 10 minutes at a rate of 3.0 and done a weight routine for 15 minutes.
