Eating soft food helps me when I've overeaten, when my stomach is in "crisis" or when I've gained weight. The problem with eating "normally" when you've overeaten is that your digestive system remains bogged down and never really has a chance to catch up.
Eating soft food includes meals like steamed veggies, soups, minced meats and lots of liquid. These foods are easier to digest and will still nourish you while your body catches up.
A few guidelines on the foods, though.
Steamed veggies - don't over steam the veggies. This pulls the nutrients out of them. If the veggies lose their natural color than you've over steamed them.

Soups - make your own in the slow cooker to keep the sodium down. Canned soups are notorious for their sodium content. Try my Detox Veggies Soup instead.
Meat - use organic meats that are raw. Don't use breaded, fried or roasted meats here. You need the easiest meats to digest. I actually prefer to rest from eating meat since it requires a lot of digestive power. Your system is already stressed so why stress it even more. But, if you have to add meat, try steaming some organic, skinless, boneless soft cutlets. Make them soft enough so that you can pull them apart.
So, how long do you need to eat this "soft" food? For me, usually a day does the trick. After 24 hours of it, my system usually starts to come around. I usually have a really good bowel movement which helps. I slowly introduce solid food back into the diet on the second and third day.
Around holidays, I will detox with this "soft" food plan for the weekends. When I first went on the Paleo diet regimen and was eating heavily on my one "off" day from Paleo, I would use the "soft food" plan on Saturdays or Sundays to get me back into fighting shape by Monday.
Finally, eating "soft" food is nutritious so feel free to use it when you need it.
